I qualified from St George’s Hospital, University of London, in 1985. Subsequently gaining experience in A&E, paediatric medicine and eventually gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. I developed a strong research interest in the neurobiology of chronic pain states and also chronic spinal regional pain syndromes including reflex sympathetic dystrophies. I was appointed John Farman Professor of The Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1996 for contribution to pain research. I was also attached to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and also created his own molecular neurobiology laboratory with the Cambridge University Department of Medicine.
I specialise in chronic low back and neck pain including whiplash, spinal pain and use of injections for spinal pain, post spinal surgery pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD/CRPS), neuropathic pain, facet denervation and SI joint denervation, nucleoplasty, complex regional pain syndome, sympathetic and guanethidine blocker, headaches and migraine, rolotherapy and the wse of botulinum toxin for spinal pain, headaches and migraine. My research interests include spinal pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, complex regional pain syndrome, neuropathic pain, botulinum toxin for the treatment of muscle spasm associated pain and special interest groups on interventional pain and urogenital pain
As well as formal medical training at various times since 1990 onwards I have been, in addition a research fellow, a clinical lecturer at the University of Cambridge, and from 1995 Senior Research Associate, Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Relief and Palliative Care (at Arthur Rank Hospice) and eventually Director of the Pain Relief Service at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. In 2000 I accepted a post as Consultant in Pain Medicine and Lead Clinician at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and developed an expanded multidisciplinary pain service. Since 2014 I have held an honorary contract in pain Medicine at the West Suffolk Hospital Cambridge University Trust. In 2009 I became and continue to be an officer for the Interventional Pain Medicine Group of the British Pain Society. In 2011-2014 was elected to the Council of the British Pain Society. I was also a NICE liaison officer for the BPS from 2011-2013 and also chaired the website development group in 2012.
In 2010 I created and continue to moderate an online discussion group for Consultants in Pain Medicine and due to its success set up groups for pain fellows and medicolegal issues in pain. I also founded the annual Cambridge Medicolegal Conference and cofounded the Cambridge Medicolegal Forum. I'm Editor in Chief of the Journal of Observational Pain Medicine. www.joopm.com; the first three issues have been published. I am also on the Council of the London Pain Forum and and is also associate advisor to the Parliamentary Health Ombudsmen on pain related matters. Also I have recently been elected to the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine –Pain Section and Independent Doctors Federation. I continue to lecture and write widely in the academic setting as well as writing medicolegal reports. I hold clinics in Cambridge and London.
