Professional profile

I have been specialised as a consultant in non-malignant Haematology in Cambridge and Papworth Hospital since 2009. Prior to this I completed my Haematology training in the East of England and completed a 2 year Baxter Royal College of Pathologists Training Fellowship in Coagulation at Cambridge University Hospital. Over the past 5 years I have coauthored several publications on preoperative anaemia in cardiothoracic patients and a number of publications and review articles on the treatment and assessment of perioperative haemostasis in cardiac patients. I have introduced the first preoperative anaemia clinic in the Cambridge area in Papworth hospital from May this 2015 specialising in the preoperative diagnosis and correction of anaemia in order to avoid transfusion of allogeneic blood.

I have a wealth of experience in avoiding transfusion in preoperative anaemia through preoperative optimisation. I also have broad experience in diagnosis and management of patients at risk of bleeding prior to surgery (e.g. thrombocytopenia). I am responsible for the Haemoglobinopathy diagnostic service in Addenbrooke's Hospital and counsel patients on a regular basis as well as a special interest in the management of sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia. I am very experienced in the management of perioperative bleeding in major surgery.

Since April 2014 I have taken on the role of Training Program Director for haematology in the East of England.

I am an Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge.
