Professional profile
I was appointed to my current consultant post in 1990 having undergone specialist neurological training in Manchester, Oxford and Leeds. This was the first NHS consultant post which combined neurology and stroke (or cerebrovascular) medicine.
In addition to my sub-specialist practice in stroke medicine, I run a general neurological service both at Spire Leeds Hospital and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust which deals with the diagnosis, investigation and management of all common neurological symptoms and disorders.
In 2013 I was awarded the title of honorary clinical associate professor by the University of Leeds in recognition of my research work.
I believe very strongly that large clinical trials are the main way in which new treatments should be introduced into clinical practice. As well as recruiting patients to NIHR portfolio studies, I am the independent Chairman of several large academic, international, multi-centre, trial steering committees or data and safety monitoring committees.
I review research papers and grant applications for a wide range of national and international organisations.
