Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Hugh Milburn at Spire include:
Hugh is a consultant clinical psychologist and systemic psychotherapist with over twenty years’ experience working in the mental health field. Hugh has extensive knowledge of evaluating, diagnosing and treating emotional and behavioural disorders with a diverse range of client ages and groups within a variety of clinical settings. In his last NHS post, Hugh was consultant psychologist for the CAMHS service in Hastings where he provided clinical services to support a range of mental health conditions including complex trauma, eating disorders, severe anxiety and depression. He currently divides his time leading the CAMHS BESD School Service, which provides specialist clinical provision in schools for young people with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties, and his private practice.
Hugh offers a friendly, flexible and holistic approach, providing a range of therapeutic interventions tailored to the individual or families’ needs. After an initial consultation, depending on the nature of the presenting difficulty, he uses an integrative approach incorporating a range of psychological models including psychodynamic, cognitive behaviour and systemic psychotherapy. Hugh believes that a collaborative and conversationally oriented approach through a shared dialogue is the most useful way to engage with clients’ anxieties and emotional issues. Thus, the foundation of his therapeutic approach relies on establishing a trusting relationship within the therapeutic encounter, creating a healing space for personal change.
Hugh completed his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at University College London, and is a Chartered member of the British Psychology Society (BPS) and the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). He later went on to train as a Systemic Family Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, London. He is member of the UK Association of Family Therapy & Systemic Practice.
