Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Hector Chinoy at Spire include:
I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Rheumatologist. At Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, I look after about 1,000 patients with a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, run general rheumatology, specialist adult neuromuscular and combined psoriasis/psoriatic clinics. I am also the principal investigator on a number of clinical trials.
I am employed by The University of Manchester, where I am actively involved with research and the education of medical students and doctors, and am Programme Director for the Clinical Rheumatology MSc Programme. I have authored over 80 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, have presented many research abstracts in national and international conferences, and am considered to be a global expert in inflammatory myopathy.
I firmly believe in the importance of clear, open communication with patients and sufferers of musculoskeletal conditions. I see a wide range of rheumatic diseases and closely work alongside a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and podiatrists. Many rheumatic diseases cannot be cured, but accurate diagnosis and focused management/treatment can help significantly to improve pain, disability and quality of life.
On completing my medical degree at the University of Nottingham in 1996, I carried out medical training in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. I trained in Rheumatology in the North West from 2001-2009. I completed an Arthritis Research UK Fellowship at The University of Manchester studying clinical and genetic associations in myositis, a condition which causes disabling symptoms due to inflammation of muscle, and was awarded a PhD in 2007. In 2009 I became a Consultant Rheumatologist and in February 2010 was awarded a Senior Clinical Lectureship in Rheumatology.
I have research interests in genetic, epidemiological and clinical aspects of adult idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, as well as immunogenicity of biologic therapy, and supervise a number of PhD and Masters students. I am principal investigator of a UK Medical Research Council funded prospective myositis cohort collection called MYOPROSP.
I am a reviewer for several major rheumatology peer-reviewed journals, associate editor for BMC Rheumatology, advisory editor for Arthritis and Rheumatology, on the editorial board for the European Medical Journal and Reumatologia, and am on the abstract selection committee for the British Society for Rheumatology, European League Against Rheumatism and American College of Rheumatology annual conferences. I am co-chair of UKMYONET, a national consortium that fosters collaborative research in inflammatory myopathy and am a member of the Arthritis Research UK Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Clinical Trials Subcommittee.
I am a member of EuMyoNeT, a European collaborative consortium funded by the Association Française contre les Myopathies, and the International Myositis Genetics Consortium, MYOGEN. As part of EuMyoNeT, I am also chair of Euromyositis.eu, a web-based consortium that collects standardised clinical data in over 30 countries.
