MB ChB, FRCP, FRCPCH

Specialises in

After training in general paediatrics, I specialised in paediatric cardiology in 1985. I obtained a broad experience in paediatric cardiology at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and spent three years carrying out research into the neurological effects of heart surgery in children. I was senior registrar in cardiology at Birmingham Children's Hospital and underwent further training in adult cardiology leading to a special interest in the teenager and adult with congenital heart disease.

I was appointed consultant paediatric cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales in 1993 before moving to Bristol in 1998. I now have particular responsibility for the adult congenital heart disease service and for the congenital heart disease arrhythmia service for both children and adults. I also have a particular interest in cardiological disease in pregnancy and in Marfan's syndrome.

I carry out a full diagnostic service including echocardiography and diagnostic cardiac catheterisation. My invasive cardiology practice includes interventional cardiac catheterisation in children and adults with congenital heart disease - in particular invasive electrophysiology studies (pacemaker implantation and radiofrequency ablation).

In 2008, I set up Sports Cardiology UK. This is an expert assessment service which evaluates the cardiovascular system in athletes and would-be athletes of all ages from 12yrs old to old age.

Consultant Cardiologist, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Consultant Cardiologist, Bristol Royal Infirmary. Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Bristol.

My wife is a nurse and we have three young adult children. I play the guitar (Bob Dylan rather than John Williams) and I am an enthusiastic, but not very fast, long distance triathlete. I also follow the varied fortunes of the Scottish football and rugby teams and await their return to glory with unflinching optimism.
