Professional profile

During the 1990s, I was Research Fellow in CLL and Lymphoma at Leeds University under Professor Peter Hillmen having been introduced to CLL years before by Dr David Oscier and the late Professor Terry Hamblin when I was a Haematology Registrar in Bournemouth.

In 2002 I was appointed Consultant Haematologist at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. I have sat on the UK CLL Forum Executive Committee since it was conceived and was secretary to the forum for many years. I was also secretary to the NCRN CLL clinical trials subcommittee and continue to sit on this committee helping to shape future clinical trials in the UK.

My clinical practice is exclusively lymphoid malignancy including CLL, Hodgkin and Non Hodgkin Lymphoma.

I was Chair of the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Lymphoma MDT from 2005 to 2012 and have published widely and co written international guidelines on the use of alemtuzumab in CLL.

I work with the European School of Haematology at international events studying communication problems between doctors and patients. I was Head of Laboratory haematology at UHL 2002 to 2009 and Head of Department of Haematology 2009- 2012.

CLL and Lymphoproliferative disorders are usually long term conditions with complex problems at every stage, be it establishing diagnosis, understanding prognosis, dealing with complications or managing therapy.

Personal Profile

My kids are mostly grown up and grumpy! I am renovating an old house but gardening remains a mystery. Interests over the years include Sunday league cricket, primary school governing body and a choir. I organise communications workshops putting the doctor-patient relationship under the microscope.

My abiding passion is the Sea in all its moods. I sail competitively offshore in IRC Class 2. My charities are: The Lymphoma Association, as a Medical Adviser, the UKCLL Forum, the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as official team Medic.

I enjoy cooking, good company, reading, jazz, classical, opera and travel.
