Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Antony Barney Hawthorne at Spire include:
I studied medicine in Cambridge, with clinical training in Oxford. I did an MD in Nottingham with Prof Chris Hawkey 1990-1992. My research interests include clinical trials of immunosuppression in IBD, and the natural history of IBD. I have been a consultant at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff since 1995, specialising in IBD and intestinal failure.
I specialise in medical treatment and assessment of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis), and in management of patients with intestinal failure. I see patients with general gastroenterology problems related to the gut, and also perform endoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
I perform 150-200 colonoscopy procedures per year with an uncorrected caecal intubation rate of greater than 90%.
I am clinical director for gastroenterology and hepatology in Cardiff, and chair the Welsh adult home parenteral nutrition network. I am also the clinical lead for the Cardiff Intestinal Failure Team, who won the BMJ Team of the Year award for Gastroenterology in 2015.
