The Spire Wellesley Hospital Physiotherapy department has a team of specialist physiotherapists with skills in a variety of conditions, including those with a special interest in Paediatrics. Treatments are available on a Saturday morning, giving parents the chance to bring in their children outside of the working week.
Physiotherapy treatment for children is based on the child's individual needs following a thorough assessment
Paediatric physiotherapists work with children from birth to 17 years. They are qualified physiotherapists and registered with the Health Professionals Council (HPC). A paediatric physiotherapist possesses a sound knowledge of the childhood development, how patterns of movement develop from birth, and a wide range of clinical conditions.
A few examples of the different conditions treated are given below:
- Musculoskeletal problems, for example knee pain, hyper mobility, back pain, torticollis, talipes, plagiocephaly, to name a few
- Neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury
- Neuromuscular conditions, such as muscular dystrophy
- Children with Down's syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes developmental delay
- Respiratory conditions, such as cystic fibrosis
- Rheumatological conditions, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis
- Children with co-ordination difficulties.
Physiotherapy treatment for children is based on the child's individual needs following a thorough assessment. A paediatric physiotherapist works closely with the child's carers to set realistic goals and aims to achieve a treatment programme through activities that are motivating and hopefully fun. For example, a 3 year old child with mild-moderate hemiplegia (a type of cerebral palsy where one side of the body is weaker) can be encouraged to use their affected side by using a variety of play activities. Where required physiotherapists can give advice on supportive equipment, for example a standing frame or a walker, to help with the child's postural management and function.
Paediatric physiotherapists work closely with parents/carers and, when necessary, with teaching staff at school, nursery workers and other professionals to ensure that the child's physical abilities are maximised and so that therapy advice is incorporated within the daily routine of their life.
