What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant procedure is the process of moving hair roots from the back of scalp (the permanent hair zone) and implanting into the area of hair loss. Hair can also be taken from other hair bearing areas of the body.
Two types of hair transplant procedure are available; Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) where micro hair grafts are harvested from the back of the scalp directly as single hair units, or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) as a strip of hair bearing skin. This is then dissected into natural follicular units of one, two or three hairs by a team of trained technicians before being implanted and redistributed into the micro slits in the area of baldness or thinning.
An artistic approach and microsurgical skills are used to design the hairline and transplant the hair, ensuring the correct angle and orientation is achieved. The donor area is closed with stitches and usually heals without leaving a noticeable scar as the hair regrows.
Which type of graft harvesting technique is utilised depends on various factors including; patient choice, suitability and the number of grafts that are required to complete the procedure. All of these points will be discussed thoroughly and agreed during an initial consultation with the Consultant.
Who is suitable for a hair transplant?
The ideal candidate will have enough density of hair on the back of scalp to be used for the grafts and would have clear expectations as to what can be achieved in their particular case following consultation with the surgeon.
The group of people who could benefit from hair transplant include those suffering with:
- Male baldness with receding hairline to the front and temples
- Thinning or hair loss on the top of the head and crown areas
- Female hair loss with thinning
- Advancement of hairline producing a high forehead in men and women
- Burn or traumatic scar alopecia and loss of hairline
- Stable patchy alopecia
- Scar alopecia following surgery
Hair transplant procedures can also help with:
- Eye brow thickening and reconstruction
