New AMD treatment
What is AMD?
AMD stands for Age-related Macular Degeneration. The macular is a part of the retina (at the back of the eye) and is responsible for improving vision that is directly in front of us. Symptoms of AMD include distorted blurry vision which may deteriorate to a loss of central vision. There are two types of AMD these are 'wet' and 'dry'. Whilst treatments for the wet variety have been available for some time, until recently there were no widely acceptable treatments for dry AMD.
What is the new treatment?
The new treatment is an implant called an IOL VIP (Intraocular lens for the visually impaired people). The new replacement lens allows the visual process to effectively 'bypass' the problem area (macular) and use a healthy part of the retina to see.
The result, a significant improvement in vision in the vast majority of patients suitable for the procedure.
Patient suitability for the procedure is ascertained during consultation. A detailed eye test using a simulator can predict whether the procedure will be beneficial.
