Carrying excess weight can seriously affect your health and well-being, but taking the right steps to lose weight can really change your life.
At Spire Washington Hospital, in the North East, we offer a comprehensive weight loss surgery service (sometimes called bariatric or obesity surgery) including; gastric banding, gastric bypass, gastric balloon and sleeve gastrectomy.
Our patients tell us that weight loss surgery gives them the chance to do things they never thought possible. They have a renewed zest for life, with the energy and enthusiasm to play with their kids, play sports or go on a long haul holiday.
Weight loss surgery at Spire Washington Hospital - helping you get your life back

Research has shown that weight loss surgery is more effective in the long term than weight loss drugs or diets. Your weight loss surgery will be undertaken by an experienced weight loss surgeon in our safe, clean, private hospital. Surgery is only part of the solution, and we also have a dedicated weight loss surgery support team including a specialist nurse and dietitian. Once you have met the team, your own personal weight loss programme will be created.
Weight loss surgery available at Spire Washington Hospital:
- Gastric banding - a silicon band is tied around the stomach to reduce the amount of food that can be consumed. Usually involves a one night stay with follow-up appointments for band adjustments.
- Gastric bypass - the size of the stomach is reduced, and then a piece of the small intestine is attached to the newly created reduced stomach. Usually involves a three night stay in hospital.
- Sleeve gastrectomy - reduces stomach size to about one third. Usually involves a three night stay.
- Gastric balloon - a balloon is placed into the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be consumed. Usually involves a 2 night stay for the insertion, and no over-night stay for the removal 6 months later.
We will provide you with advice and support throughout your weight loss journey, from your first appointment until long after your surgery. Our dietitian, who is experienced in advising patients on making lifestyle changes, will help to guide you through your first year following surgery. At the end of the year you will have learned how to work with your choice of surgery to achieve optimum results.
Spire Washington Hospital also holds regular weight loss surgery information evenings. The evenings are free to attend and provide an opportunity to gain some expert advice from our weight loss surgery team.
