Dr Kumar has worked in anaesthetics since 1998 undergoing a fully structured training in the UK. He currently hold sa substantive consultant post at Sunderland Royal Hospital, devoting equal time to general anaesthetics and chronic pain management.He has a balanced approach towards chronic pain conditions with regards to the use of medication, interventional procedures, supplementary therapy and multidisciplinary involvement.As a pain specialist, he frequently undertakes the following procedures in chronic pain: Peripheral nerve blocks followed by pulsed radiofrequency to the affected nerves; lumbar and cervical facet joint injections; radiofrequency thermal ablation of medial nerve branch to produce facet joint denervation; epidural steroid injections; stellate ganglion blocks; lumbar sympathectomy.He spent a year in 2002 - 2003 researching into cellular receptors that may have a role in explaining some chronic pain conditions. The outcome was well appreciated by the Anaesthetic Research Committee.
Dr Kumar's main interests outside work is indulging in DIY projects. He also likes 'Information Technology' and enjoys keeping himself up to date.
