Mrs Pamela Magill, aged 54 from Wolsingham, is a great example of exactly how successful joint replacements can be with the right care and attention.
"The surgery has transformed my life, by far surpassing my expectations- I was back at work within three months and now I can do everything I enjoy"
Mrs Pamela Magill
A former PE teacher, Mrs Magill had a bilateral knee replacement carried out at Spire Washington Hospital by consultant Shaun O’Brien, after osteoarthritis caused irreparable damage to her knees. She had previously had a series of procedures over a period of nine years, but pain had started to disturb her sleep and pain relief from her GP was no longer enough, meaning a longer-term solution was required.
Before the operation, Mrs Magill could barely walk 200m and her legs were significantly out of alignment. On attendance to Spire Washington Hospital, a thorough and speedy diagnostic process confirmed that both knees would indeed have to be replaced. Although not carried out very often, Mr O’Brien recommended bilateral knee replacement surgery (ie doing both knees at the same time) due to Mrs Magill being a good candidate for this – both committed to pre and post-habilitation and otherwise fit and well.
Post-operation, Mrs Magill was in hospital for 4 days and walking very soon after. She was given help with pain relief management and at home she moved speedily from one crutch to another, using an exercise bike to aid her post-surgery physio. Her follow up scans showed excellent results.
Mrs Magill said: “Arthritis had totally ruined my life – I went from being an athletic, energetic person to some one who could barely walk down the road.
“Attending Spire Washington Hospital was a very positive experience. My consultant Mr O’Brien was available at all times and the staff were lovely – nothing was ever too much trouble. I was kept completely updated about my treatment, which was empowering and stopped me worrying too much. For example the diagnostic tools and the information they provide were fully explained to me and the speed with which I had my scans and results meant I could progress immediately to the operation without having to wait.
“The surgery has transformed my life, by far surpassing my expectations – I was back at work within three months and now I can do everything I enjoy, including walking in the hills. I was so worn down from the pain that I didn’t think I’d have a life again. I couldn’t have been more wrong and I’m eternally grateful to Mr O’Brien and for the excellent care I received from the Spire Washington Hospital team. ”
