Spire Washington Hospital now offers minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins using the latest VNUS closure fast technique and is currently the only private provider to offer this treatment in the North East.
The treatment is performed as an out-patient procedure under local anaesthetic using radio-frequency by Mr I E Hawthorn and Mr S Vetrivel, Consultant General Surgeons.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted and unsightly veins (usually on the legs) that look lumpy and bluish through the skin. They happen when the valves in the veins become weak or break, allowing blood to collect in the veins just under the skin instead of being carried up to the heart.
If left untreated, the poor circulation associated with varicose veins can lead to skin problems, such as eczema and ulcers, and they may bleed heavily if a prominent vein is injured. Varicose veins do not tend to get better without treatment, and usually get worse with time.
VNUS closure fast procedure
VNUS closure fast involves passing a small catheter that delivers radio-frequency (RF) energy which then converts into heat in the diseased vein wall. As the thermal energy is delivered, the vein wall shrinks and the vein is sealed closed. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.
VNUS closure fast can usually be performed under local anaesthetic and takes between 30 - 45 minutes per leg. It is performed as an out-patient or day-case procedure under general anaesthetic, with no overnight stay in hospital.
What happens during the VNUS closure fast procedure?
The consultant will use an ultrasound machine to position the closure catheter into the diseased vein through a small incision. Following an injection of local anaesthetic, it is then slowly withdrawn while the energy is applied to seal the vein.
Once the catheter has been removed and your leg will be bandaged and elasticated compression stocking may be provided to aid healing.
After the procedure
Following the procedure, you should continue with your usual activities - your consultant will provide you with further advice.
Varicose vein treatment is commonly performed and generally safe. However, all surgical and medical procedures carry risks as well as benefits. One advantage of minimally invasive alternatives to surgery is that they do not require a stay in hospital, may leave less scarring and recovery periods can be much shorter.
At consultation you should ask your consultant how these benefits and any risks apply to you.
Cost
Initial consultation to see Mr Hawthorn or Mr Vetrivel is approximately £150. Charges for the procedure vary from:
One leg under local anaesthetic £1,860.
One leg under general anaesthetic £2,470
Both legs under general anaesthetic £2,920
All prices will be confirmed at consultation following a medical examination with your consultant. The price does include all hospital, consultant and anaesthetist fees in relation to the procedure.
