Dr Whitehead is a consultant physician and gastroenterologist at the Conquest Hospital, Hastings.
Having qualified in 1984 at Westminster Medical School, Dr Whitehead continued his medical training at The Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Conquest Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital, London.
Dr Whitehead was then a research fellow in gastroenterology at St Thomas' Hospital investigating the treatment of helicobacter pylori, in particular, the effects of metals.Following this Dr Whitehead took a senior registrar post in medicine and gastroenterology in Swansea and Cardiff.
His special interests are in endoscopy, nutrition, dyspepsia and peptic ulcer disease.
He has published research on treatment of non-ulcer dyspepsia, treatment of helicobacter pylori, trace metal absorption and causes of abnormal liver function tests.
