Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon


Mr Apthorp trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and completed his Orthopaedic training at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He spent a year in Perth, Western Australia, specialising in complex joint replacement and revision surgery.

Since being appointed as a Consultant in 1999 Mr Apthorp has continued to develop his practice, performing approximately 600 primary and revision joint replacements per year. He has particular interests in rapid recovery hip replacement, minimally invasive surgery, complex and revision hip surgery and young adults with hip problems.

Mr Apthorp:

  • has pioneered rapid recovery hip replacement surgery in the UK and currently his patients enjoy the shortest length of stay for hip replacement in England (data provided by SE Coast Audit, Strategic Health Authority, 2009). He has developed a programme to enhance patient recovery following hip replacement and is now working with the Strategic Health Authority to develop the programme in other UK hospitals. Such was the success of Mr Apthorps surgery and the Enhanced Recovery Programme that the following milestones were reached;
    - the first patient in the UK to go home the same day as their surgery
    - the first patient in the world with bilateral hip replacements to return home the day following surgery
  • treats patients from the UK and Internationally
  • often provides second opinions for primary and complex revision surgery
  • is recognised as expert in treatment of failed metal on metal hip replacements and hip resurfacing
  • co-leads a clinical research team which undertakes regular research projects and audit to ensure best practice, optimal results and patient satisfaction
  • is regularly invited to present his research, results and Enhanced Recovery hip replacement techniques and outcomes at Orthopaedic meetings around the UK and Internationally
  • assists with the training of young surgeons, as well as teaching experiences established surgeons new techniques. He also trains hospital teams to learn the enhanced recovery philosophies
  • is involved with the design and development of new joint replacement implants being introduced around the world
  • was recognised by his peers in a National newspaper as someone they would refer their 'nearest and dearest' to. They noted that he was "meticulous, with enormous experience snd excellent results" (Daily Mail, 2010)
