For most of Sarah’s life her weight stopped her from living the life she wanted and achieving her dream to run the London Marathon.
After years spent yo-yo dieting Sarah decided that she would undergo a Gastric Band surgery at Spire St Saviour's Hospital.
Sarah was determined to go ahead with the surgery and over a period of six weeks she met the full team of specialists at the hospital including the nutritionist, the Consultant Gastroenterologist, Mr Basu, and the Consultant Psychiatrist. They all agreed that Sarah would benefit from the Gastric Band and developed a twelve month support programme to assist her after surgery.
After she went home Sarah continued to see Mr Basu at regular check-ups to ensure her recovery was going to plan. She also regularly saw Victoria, the hospital’s nutritionist, who provided support on her diet and helped her to stay positive if the weight loss wasn’t as fast as she’d hoped.
A few weeks after the operation Sarah started going for daily walks. This then progressed to jogging, and combing the exercise with her new diet meant that each week her weight began to drop and she gradually went down a dress size each month.
Sarah continued her jogging and achieved one of her goals when she ran her first half marathon in Folkestone. She’s since been accepted to run in the London Marathon in April 2012 for Leukaemia CARE Charity. This means a lot to Sarah because it’s a challenge she has aspired to do since 1993 when she lost her mum to cancer.
Sarah now says: “I wished I had known about this operation years ago as I wasted many years being a yo-yo dieter. I feel that my life is now starting and I have lots more confidence. I am much happier and taking on challenges I would never have thought possible. I feel 20 years younger.”
As for the team that looked after her, Sarah says, “I would recommend the team at Spire St Saviour’s Hospital to anyone who is looking into having a gastric band fitted. I cannot thank Mr Basu and his team enough for giving my life back again.”
