Professor Richard Field qualified from the Westminster Hospital, London in 1980. After house jobs at St Stephen's Hospital in Chelsea, Senior House Officer posts at University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, he completed a PhD thesis at Cambridge University. His Specialist Orthopaedic training was undertaken at the Whittington and Westminster Hospitals in London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Colchester and Black Notley Hospitals in Essex and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
In 1994, Richard Field was appointed to St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a special interest in hip surgery. Since 2004, his NHS practice has been based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where he is the Director of Research. He is one of the UK's most experienced practitioners in arthroscopic hip surgery, muscle sparing hip replacement, hip resurfacing and complex hip replacement. He undertakes between approximately 500 hip operations per year.
