    Special clinical interests:

    Professor Kang’s clinical interests include dysphagia, dyspepsia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, other oesophageal conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer screening. He performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and oesophageal physiological studies. He is actively involved in research in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, including Barrett’s oesophagus and laryngopharyngeal reflux, eosinophilic oesophagitis, diverticular disease of the colon, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

    Research interests:

    Professor Kang is active in research, has both an MD and a PhD and more than 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is co-lead of the National Registry of eosinophilic oesophagitis. He is a co-author of the latest British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines for the management of Barrett’s Oesophagus, to be published in 2013 and which most gastroenterologists in this country and some beyond are likely to follow. He is a member of the Multinational Committee within the ROME Foundation, an international organization which promotes research into functional gastrointestinal disorders and whose diagnostic criteria for conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia are adopted by gastroenterologists throughout the world.

    Background Information 
    Professional profile:

    Professor Kang studied medicine in Birmingham University, coming top in his year and graduating with an honours degree in 1973. He trained in gastroenterology at the General Hospital, Birmingham and the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. In 1981 he joined the National University of Singapore as lecturer in medicine and subsequently became consultant gastroenterologist, Head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Associate Professor of Medicine. He emigrated back to Britain in 1995, and was consultant gastroenterologist at the James Paget Hospital, Norfolk. Since 1999 he has been consultant gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s University Hospital, Roehampton. He was appointed Visiting Professor of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 2011. From 2008 Professor Kang has been carrying out his private practice within the London Gastroenterology Partnership.
