Compliance with CMA Order 2014

In October 2014, the Competition and Markets Authority (the "CMA") published the Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014 (the "Order") following its investigation into the private healthcare industry. The Order imposed requirements on private hospital operators to disclose certain information in relation to referring clinicians (as defined by the Order) for the benefit of patients. Full details about the investigation and the Order can be found on the CMA web page. The information provided by Spire Healthcare below is required by the Order.

"Higher value" services

The services provided at Spire St Anthony's Hospital to referring clinicians and the amounts charged by Spire for those services are set out below:

  • Use of consulting rooms: £21.60 per hour
  • Medical secretarial services: £25.48 per hour

“Low value” services

The following “low-value” services are also provided to referring clinicians with practising privileges at this hospital:

  • General services to ensure clinical safety (eg in-house training, chaperones)
  • Operational services such as patient bookings/admissions (including online booking and payment for consultations), access to a virtual consultation solution, administrative services and billing, and insurance/indemnity cover in respect of NHS patients
  • General marketing support, including production of consultant directories, promotional activities, web profiles etc
  • Basic workplace amenities such as teas/coffees/refreshments, subsidised meals, car parking, stationery

Spire group Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) Chairs conferences

Spire group Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) Chairs conferences are held twice a year, focusing on clinical safety and governance issues. MAC Chairs from all of Spire’s hospitals are invited to attend, with their partners, and are joined by members of Spire’s senior management.

  • In 2017, the conferences were held in Berlin and Aylesbury and the total cost of the events was approximately £85,000 and £25,000 respectively.
  • In 2018, a conference was held in Berlin and the total cost of the event was approximately £88,000.
  • In 2019, the conferences were held in Lisbon and Aylesbury and the total cost of the events was approximately £95,000 and £28,400. MAC Chairs were also invited to attend the Spire Healthcare Senior Management Conference in Birmingham in June 2019 (8 MAC Chairs attended at a cost of £845 per head).
  • No conferences were held in 2020.
  • In 2021, conferences were held virtually via Zoom as well as face to face in Aylesbury. The total cost of the events in 2021 was approximately £2,120 and £19,300 respectively. 
  • In 2022, the conferences were held in May at Spire’s head office in London and in November at Oulten Hall, Leeds. The total cost of the events in 2022 were approximately £6,463 and £20,338 respectively.
  • In 2023, the conferences were held in June at M Restaurant in London and in November at The Midland Hotel, Manchester. The total cost of the events in 2023 were approximately £2,931 and £20,389 respectively.

In 2019, Spire Healthcare held a series of 5 dinners with 70 consultants from across 5 Spire hospitals for the purpose of meeting various members of the Spire Executive team and listening to and engaging with consultants. The cost of the dinners ranged from £60 to £80 per head. No dinners were held in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023

  • September 2017 - Relaunch event at Hampton Court - 163 attendees at £107.75 per head
  • November 2017 - England vs Australia Rugby - 9 tickets at £659 per head
  • December 2017 - MAC meeting - 10 attendees at £173 per head
  • February 2018 - England vs Wales Rugby - 5 tickets at £750 per head
  • September 2018 - Consultant event at Kew Gardens - 170 attendees at £171.78 per head
  • November 2018 - MAC dinner - 13 attendees at £177.16 per head
  • November 2019 - Hospital Director Retirement Event - 280 attendees (staff and consultants) at £29.40 per head
  • November 2019 - MAC dinner - 28 attendees at £134.50 per head
  • December 2020 - Christmas hampers for the MAC committee - 16 members at £50 per head
  • December 2022 - Christmas hampers for the MAC committee - 14 members at £35 per head

Clinician financial interests in Spire Healthcare

Private hospital operators are required to disclose details of referring clinicians practising at their facilities, who have a share or financial interest in those facilities or any equipment used there. Some clinicians may own shares in Spire Healthcare Group plc, which were acquired either at the admission price or through trading on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. Where a referring clinician has an individual web page profile on this hospital website, relevant shares and/or financial interests are disclosed there. For referring clinicians who do not have an individual profile, their shares and/or financial interests are shown below:

Mr Tselentakis holds less than 0.1% of the shares in the Spire Healthcare Group plc.

Clinician advisory services to Spire Healthcare

Private hospital operators are required to disclose details of certain paid services provided by referring clinicians to private hospitals operators in addition to exercising practicing privileges at that hospital. This information can be found on the referring clinician’s individual web page profile on this hospital website.

  • Dr Kashif Burney, Consultant Radiologist, commenced as MAC Chair in October 2023.  He is paid £14,000 per annum for this role since October 2023.
  • Dr Peter Williamson, Consultant ENT was MAC Chair January until October 2023 when he retired and was paid £12,000 for this role in 2023.
  • Dr Januz Bernard Liban, Consultant Anaesthetist, is paid £200 per hour for his role as the Clinical Governance Director at the hospital. Duties include chairing the hospital Clinical Governance meetings and advising and dealing with clinical governance matters. He was not paid for any services in 2021, 2022 or 2023.
  • Dr Wathik Alsaud is engaged as an adviser in relation to the hospital’s children and young person’s service. He was paid £3,000 in 2021 for his role, which includes providing non-urgent medical advice in relation to the service. In 2022 he was paid £2,750 for this role and in 2023 he was paid £3,000.
  • Dr J Stephenson is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Microbiology services, which includes Bacteriology, Mycology and Virology and to give clinical interpretation including advice where required. He was paid £13,200 for this role in 2021, £13,200 for this role in 2022 and £13,200 for this role in 2023.
  • Dr Kanchan Patil, Consultant Anaesthetist, is paid £250 per hour to provide regular anaesthetic support services for patients undergoing pre-assessment at the hospital. She also provides advice and support to the hospital’s Pre-operative Assessment team as and when required. She was paid £9,500 in 2021, £14,500 in 2022 and £12,000 in 2023 for these services.
  • Dr Anwar Hussein, Consultant Anaesthetist, is paid £500 per month, and subsequently £150 per assessment thereafter, to provide regular anaesthetic support services for patients undergoing pre-assessment at the hospital. He also provides advice and support to the hospital’s Pre-operative Assessment team as and when required. He was paid £9,000 in 2021, £22,500 in 2022 and £30,000 in 2023 for these services.
  • Dr Sameer Zar  is engaged as an advisor for supporting the hospital with JAG compliance. He is paid £500 per month for this role. In 2022 he was paid £4,500 and in 2023 he was paid £5,500 in his advisor role.
  • Dr Modupe Elebute, Consultant Haematologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Clinical Chemistry/Haematology and Blood Transfusion work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. She was paid £3,450 for this role in 2022. She resigned in September 2023 and was paid £2,875 per annum for this role.
  • Dr Zaid Abboudi, Consultant Haematologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Clinical Chemistry/Haematology and Blood Transfusion work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. He was paid £3,450 for this role in 2022.  He retired in January 2023 and was paid £287.50 per annum for this role.
  • Dr Simon Stern provides Haematology and Transfusion Services to Spire St Anthony’s Hospital. Dr Stern chairs the hub Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee for the London, Kent and Sussex division and the local Transfusion Committee meeting at St Anthony’s. Dr Stern is paid £10500 per annum.
  • Dr Pawel Kaczmarek, Consultant Haematologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Haematology and Blood Transfusion work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. He is paid £3,450 per annum for this role.
  • Dr Gleb Ivanov, Consultant Haematologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Haematology and Blood Transfusion work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. He is paid £3,450 per annum for this role since February 2023.
  • Dr Caroline Ebdon, Consultant Haematologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Haematology and Blood Transfusion work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. She is paid £3,450 per annum for this role since November 2023.
  • Dr Nikhil Johri, Chemical Pathologist, is engaged as an advisor to review on-site Clinical work and give clinical interpretation including advice where required. He was paid £6,750 per annum for this role in 2023. From October 2023 he is paid £9000 per annum to include the review of Point of Care EQA for the London, Kent and Sussex division.
