Hiring, investing and continuing to provide the special care started by The Daughters of the Cross in 1904

It is hard to imagine now, but the first operating theatre at St Anthony’s Hospital was equipped in 1904 for the princely sum of £225.

Today Spire St Anthony’s Hospital is investing nearly £30m developing the site. Our existing four theatres will be replaced with six new theatres including a hybrid theatre and an enhanced recovery area. A new musculoskeletal centre, with a fully equipped physiotherapy gym and hydrotherapy pool, treatment rooms and additional consulting rooms and car parking are to be built.

Here is what St Anthony's looked like in 1904 along with one of our first operating theatres:

... and this is what our new theatre complex will look like in 2016:

The development will support the hospital’s investment in the very latest surgical equipment and technologies, including robotic operating machines. The aim of the investment is to give patients even faster access to treatment following their initial appointment, whether for routine or more complex procedures.

The hospital is also looking to recruit several intensive care nurses, theatre practitioners and radiographers to boost the local people it already employs.

The work will take place with careful consideration for the occupied hospital and patients. The whole build programme has been carefully designed with special logistical plans to ensure there is minimal impact on patients, staff and daily operations. ISG will be providing fit out services on the project, working with Beaumont & Cowling architects, structural engineers Morgan Tucker, and mechanical engineers Leonard Engineering Design Associates.

Demolition begins to make room for the new theatres:

The first phase of works can nearly begin. Building will start in June and will take place over 20 weeks.

Once phase one is complete, the existing building will be refurbished to further improve the patient experience at the hospital. The final work is expected to be completed by July 2016.

This is an exciting time for the hospital and once these new theatres are fully functioning we will be well placed to further deliver on our ambitions for Spire St Anthony’s to be the benchmark hospital in the Spire Healthcare portfolio.

As Hospital Director, Melvin Robson, states: “To run a successful, modern hospital, capable of treating thousands of patients a year with increasingly complex needs, regular and sizeable investment is required. The Sisters were ahead of their time when they planned this hospital. They wanted it to be a single room environment, embodying an atmosphere as homely as possible whilst providing skilled professional expertise for now and the future. We will continue to embody the hospital’s incredible history, its superb philosophy of care and provide facilities to attract the very best staff and consultants so we can achieve the best outcomes for our patients.”

Spire St Anthony’s is a private hospital that also supports the busy local NHS hospitals in the area, including St George’s Hospital and Epsom and St Helier NHS Trusts, providing cardiac and general surgery.

Helen Jones, Senior Administrative Sister Nurse, has worked at St Anthony’s for 30 years. She explains: “Spire St Anthony’s has a rich history with a unique ethos, which is a legacy from the Daughters of the Cross and is threaded throughout the organisation. There is a feeling of peace and serenity as you enter the building and our staff are passionate about maintaining our high quality care for all our patients. We look forward to our new vision for the future and very much hope to maintain the levels and types of care that we believe are not just characteristic but also unique to this hospital.”

Unusually for a private hospital, St Anthony’s has an eight-bed critical care unit, enabling staff to provide one-to-one care for the most seriously ill patients and those recovering from advanced, complex surgery carried out at the hospital. Spire St Anthony's continues to strive towards offering exceptional healthcare which is portrayed in our considerable investment into new state-of-the-art theatres.
