On Thursday 2 July 2015 Professor John Axford, consultant rheumatologist at Spire St Anthony's Hospital, was elected into the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).
Between May and June RSM members were asked vote for their next council member. There were eight candidates and Professor Axford was elected by means of majority vote.
Professor Axford said: “I am honoured to be elected as a member of the RSM Council. I have seen the Society evolve from a doctors’ clinical forum to an organisation central to the clinical and scientific activities of its Fellows. I should like to continue to contribute to the RSM and help the Society achieve its goals in advancing multi-faceted educational resources for all healthcare professionals from undergraduate through to the retiree.“
Professor Axford will take up post on 1 October 2015 for a period of four years.
