Spire St Anthony’s explains why the care and values of the Daughters of the Cross will always be a part of the unique nursing and care provided at the hospital.
In recent weeks, nursing has been part of every election campaign as the parties outlined their manifestos and plans to recruit more nurses and invest in patient care. As we celebrate International Nurses Day and Florence Nightingale’s birthday, Spire St Anthony’s Hospital examines its own nursing values and how it plans to invest in its nurses as well as the hospital so the unique standards of care established by the Sisters can continue well into the future.
The hospital has recently started redeveloping its theatre complex, investing nearly £30m into six new theatres and supporting services like a hydrotherapy pool.

Treating nearly 10,000 patients a year the hospital works closely with its local NHS partners and peers. In 2014, 2,000 St Anthony’s patients were asked if they would recommend Spire St Anthony's to their friends and family. 99.4% said they would. Credit for this success has largely been given to the care and attention received by the patients from the nurses at the hospital.
Good nursing leads to better patient outcomes and as Matron of Spire St Anthony’s, Clare Forsyth explains:
“It is my job to ensure our nurses have the right skills and time to do their job properly. Like any professional, nurses take pride in their job and need time and resources for training. Whether it is as an intensive care nurse, an oncology nurse or a community nurse, training and revalidation is as important to the hospital as it is to the nurses themselves. I also keep the careful balance between the unique ethos of care and compassion instilled by the Sisters in the staff at the hospital and the rigorous demands of a modern hospital and healthcare environment.
“This goes beyond our patients as I meet regularly with our NHS partners to share insight, outcomes and nursing practice so we can always strive for further improvements in care.”
Sister Dru Lyle has been a nurse at Spire St Anthony’s for nearly 20 years. She even shares her birthday with Florence Nightingale. She comments: “Nursing is a massively fulfilling career and a career for life should you choose it. It has changed enormously over the decades. Investment in modern medicine, training and new techniques mean that decisions conventionally made by the doctors, back in the day of Florence Nightingale, are now our responsibility and are part of our daily routine.
“One of the reasons I love working here is because I have time to spend with my patients, delivering excellent, hands-on clinical care in the knowledge I’m making a difference and making their stay a positive experience. Essentially it gives me the opportunity to give the high standards of care that I was trained to give.
“The patient care is consultant-led at Spire St Anthony’s but I’m very much part of the multidisciplinary team, supporting every patient. I know I’m an integral part of the successful outcome for my patients.
“I believe our patients often return for subsequent care because they feel safe and secure at this hospital. It is not just the environment that is familiar but the staff. Like me, many have been here a long time and we like to spend time and get to know our patients.”
