I am a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in upper GI surgery at Manchester Foundation Trust. I was appointed in 2017.

I cover all aspects of general and urgent surgery, with a subspecialty interest in reflux, LINX, oesophageal dysmotility, dysphagia, hernia – including hiatus, incisional, epigastric/ventral and groin, gallstones and upper GI endoscopy.

Within my current consultant role, I am a general surgical lead clinician for the national emergency laparotomy audit and lead for frailty within general surgery, where I am heading up an NHS England pilot study for care of patients undergoing abdominal operations with underlying co-morbidities. I take an active role in undergraduate teaching.

I graduated from The University of Leeds and subsequently trained in Yorkshire, where I attained an MD in ‘1H NMR spectrometric identification of biomarkers in renal transplantation’. I moved to Manchester for higher surgical training and then spent a period of time in The Netherlands.

I have over 30 publications and have presented my work nationally and internationally.

One of my key areas of expertise is within The Reflux Clinic. Gastro-oesophageal reflux affects 15% of the UK population and its prevalence is increasing. Diagnosis is often made on clinical symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, throat problems, cough, and disrupted sleep. It is a chronic condition where the mainstay of treatment is medication.

There are multiple reasons that you may have reflux, some you can’t help such as your age, family history, or presence of a hiatus hernia, and other reasons such as weight, smoking, diet, and certain medications.

The Reflux Clinic has been set up to cover all aspects of reflux disease, we run a multi-disciplinary team containing an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, a gastroenterologist, and an Upper GI surgeon, along with experts in oesophageal physiology.

Our aim is to provide a bespoke management plan for all patients with reflux that will suit them and their needs.
