I see patients with a wide spectrum of arterial and venous diseases including varicose veins, venous insufficiency, leg ulcer, aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease and lower limb ischaemia.

I had extensive training in general and vascular surgery in Scotland, London and the USA.

I have published widely on all aspects of vascular surgery. I have published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in surgical literature, written 13 book chapters and edited one book. I have presented my work to over 80 national and international conferences.

I supervise postgraduate degree research students. As well as a busy clinical practice, I have a major interest in surgical training. I am the convener of a skills course for higher surgical training at the College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1993 for a thesis entitled: “A new approach to the prevention of anastomotic neointimal hyperplasia”.

This forward-thinking paper was based on work completed as a fellow at the University of Iowa, North America, and I won the Peter B. Samuels Award for the best fellows’ paper, during a presentation to the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery (SCVS).

My continued research interests in vascular surgery include:

  • risk scoring for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • the use of novel imaging techniques for predicting aneurysm rupture
  • improving the results of intervention for thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm disease
  • outcomes in carotid surgery under regional anaesthesia
  • the role of new techniques for treating venous disease, including radiofrequency ablation and foam sclerotherapy
