Mr Murie graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1975. Thereafter he trained in Glasgow and Manchester before being appointed as Reader in Surgery and Honorary Consultant surgeon at the University of Oxford in 1983. In 1989 he moved to Edinburgh as Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary where he was Head of the Vascular Surgery Service from 1995 to 2011. Since 2011 he has significantly reduced his NHS commitment in the light of increasing non-NHS activities, including acting as external Professor of Surgery to the National University of Malaysia.
From 1989 to 2010 Mr Murie had an editorial role in the British Journal of Surgery, a distinguished surgical journal (second in the world by circulation and impact factor). From 2002 to 2010 he was BJS Editor-in-Chief. Mr Murie has been an executive and/or council member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, the Vascular Society, The European Vascular Society and the Royal College of Surgeons & Physicians of Glasgow. Since 2003 he has been an examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS examination in the UK.
