Mr Neil Johns

Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon

MBBS, MD, FRCS

"I enjoy working with the breast team at Spire Harpenden as they are very supportive and provide the best outcomes for our patients."

Specialises in

I am a Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon. I am adept at incorporating the latest plastic surgical techniques in the management of breast disease, enabling the best cosmetic outcome after surgery.

I treat all aspects of breast disease, benign or cancerous, and patients with a family history of breast cancer. I am trained to ultilise the latest oncoplastic techniques such as therapeutic mammoplasty / mastopexy, partial breast reconstruction with lateral chest wall perforator flaps (such as LTAP and LiCAP), full breast reconstruction with implant, LD muscle flap, and lipofilling techniques.
I am one of the few who regularly performs partial breast reconstruction with a fat only flap (chest wall perforator flap) following large lumpectomy thus maintaining breast shape and avoiding mastectomy in many cases.

I feel passionate about being able to offer the most contemporary management of breast cancer to my patients and provide a clear, understandable, and holistic approach to personalise each individual patient’s management plan.

My philosophy is to utilise oncoplastic breast surgical techniques to push the boundaries of breast conserving surgery by being able to excise large areas of the breast which provides the best oncological outcome, and at the same time being able to reshape or rebuild the breast to provide the best aesthetic outcomes.

I completed my specialist breast surgery training at the world renowned Edinburgh Breast Unit. From there I went on to complete the prestigious National Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship, regarded as the gold standard for breast reconstructive training in the UK at the Royal Free Hospital plastic surgery department, London.

I completed my Doctorate of Medicine in the field of cancer associated weight loss at the university of Edinburgh. I am widely published in this field, as well as breast disease, and other disciplines in surgery.

I have been a member of faculty at international conferences and have presented my work globally. I have written contributions for peer reviewed textbooks and I am peer reviewer for a number of journals.

I received the coveted Syme Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This is a prestigious mark of excellence awarded by the College to a Fellow of the College in good standing, on the basis of a submitted thesis (MD or PhD), culminating in the research being published in high quality peer reviewed journals.
