I have worked at Spire Hospitals for over 15 years. All of the Spire Hospitals at which I run clinics are supported by dedicated colleagues within clinical, managerial and administrative departments. The environment at Spire Harpenden (and Spire Hospitals at Bushey/Portsmouth) is extremely well appointed for clinical practice. Notwithstanding the outpatient areas, X-ray facilities and laboratory support are exceptional. As a chest physician I specialise in respiratory diseases. Sub-specialty interests include asthma, COPD, infection (tuberculosis and bronchiectasis) and occupational/environmental lung diseases. My practice also encompasses the management of interstitial lung disease, thromboembolic disease/pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer. I carry out approximately 100 bronchoscopies each year.

I run clinics at Harefield Hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital with respect to the investigation and treatment of sleep disordered breathing (obstructive sleep apnoea).

My medical practice is informed by my interests and fulfilment arising from clinical care. While I have also gained great experience from research and teaching, the prevailing satisfaction and ongoing commitment relates to the unique privilege arising from patient contact in pursuit of diagnosis and treatment for the various conditions presenting to our clinics.

I qualified at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School (London University) in 1987 (MB BS). My clinical training rotated through London teaching hospitals whereupon I gained the MRCP diploma from the Royal College of Physicians. My research was undertaken at the Royal Brompton Hospital/National Heart and Lung institute under the mentorship of Professor Peter Barnes. My MD thesis was written on the subject of inflammatory mechanisms for allergic airways diseases, focusing particularly on the immunology and pharmacology of asthma and airway disease.

In 1998 I was awarded a South West Thames Research Bursary which facilitated my research with the Cochrane Collaboration (St Georges Hospital). As a result of this collaboration I have continued to publish review articles on areas within respiratory medicine ever since. Thereafter I was appointed Senior Registrar in respiratory medicine at the Royal Brompton and St George's Hospitals, London. Following a four year senior registrar training I commenced my first consultant post at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (1999). In 2001 I moved to Royal Brompton and Harefield Foundation NHS Trust/West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust to commence my current post (consultant physician/honorary senior lecturer respiratory medicine) in 2001.

I am the clinical lead for respiratory medicine in Hertfordshire which is provided by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Central London Health Care NHS Trust. I work closely with my chest physician colleagues with respect to the administration/management of our combined services. I am an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and, as part of this role, I sit on a national examination board committee with respect to the vetting of clinical cases presented to candidates.

I am an honorary senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute. This is a great privilege and it reflects my ongoing research interests with respect to systematic reviews/meta analysis (for respiratory medicine) and the investigation of small airways diseases. With respect to my work examining small airways disease, I was a co-supervisor for a PhD student following a substantial grant from the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council.
