Breast lump investigation

At our one-stop breast clinic at Spire South Bank Hospital you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced consultant surgeons. The hospital is quite unique in having a wealth of breast care experience provided by our three breast care consultant surgeons. They are also supported by an excellent multi-disciplinary team to help to give you a swift diagnosis and treatment plan.

If you discover a lump our consultants aim to see you within a week and will carry out the appropriate tests during your initial consultation meeting. Results from the mammography and ultrasound tests will be given to you during the clinic. Fine needle and biopsy results are available within a week.

What's involved?

Overgrowth of tissue in the breast can cause breast lumps. The vast majority are benign (ie not due to cancer). If a lump is filled with fluid, it is known as a cyst.

Breast clinics use a triple assessment system to diagnose breast lumps. There are three stages:

The surgeon will examine your breasts and armpits, pressing gently on the skin to feel for changes in texture.

Imaging may be needed to investigate inside your breast to see where the lump is. There are a number of types of imaging that could be used; for example; ultrasound or mammography

If a breast abnormality is found during the investigation a biopsy may be carried out to determine whether further treatment is required.
