Background Information
Professional profile:

Malcolm Woodcock is a military consultant ophthalmologist who carries out his NHS work at Worcestershire for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He set up and runs the vitreoretinal (VR) service in Worcestershire. His vitreoretinal fellowship training was undertaken at the 2 largest and busiest VR units in the country, the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. As well as doing a high volume of retinal detachment surgery, macular hole repairs and peeling epiretinal membranes he has been involved with many more complex and innovative vitreoretinal techniques. His referral base also incorporates tertiary referrals from other consultants, including dealing with the complications that can sometimes occur following cataract surgery. He is a very experienced cataract surgeon with a good deal of additional experience in complex high-risk cataract cases.

Mr. Woodcock speaks widely on ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery to other doctors and professional groups including optometrists, GPs and military medial officers. He also lectures on aviation ophthalmology regularly at the Royal Air Force's Centre for Aviation Medicine and in particular on its internationally renowned Diploma of Aviation Medicine course. He has also been involved in teaching and lecturing to medical students at the universities of Cambridge, Birmingham, Cape Town and University College London.

Mr. Woodcock has very active research interests and maintains a full time research assistant at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for research into surgical adjuncts in ocular trauma. He has numerous publications in the medical literature and given many presentations at both national and international meetings. He is a reviewer of papers for 4 international scientific journals in ophthalmology.
