Patient discharge information:
Preparing to leave hospital

When you are ready to leave hospital, a discharge summary will be completed and we will give you a copy and also a copy for your GP along with a letter detailing your height, weight and blood pressure.

If you have a problem after your discharge please call the ward on 01905 362 207

Dressing for wounds

Your nurse will discuss arrangements of change of dressings with you.

Medication for you to take home

When you leave the hospital you may be given medication such as pain relief or antibiotics to further assist your recovery. The pharmacist will try and visit before you leave hospital to discuss your medication with you. Please feel free to contact a member of the pharmacy team if you are unsure of any instructions.

Your insurance company may only cover a proportion of the cost of these discharge medications. Please be aware that a charge may therefore be raised for items not covered in the terms and conditions of your policy.

Discharge process

A member of staff will discuss these points with you on your day of discharge:

  • drugs or medicines to take home
  • wound care and post-operative information
  • discharge letter
  • follow-up appointments
  • post-discharge contact details
  • return of any valuables
  • transport/care at home
  • any questions you may have
  • sickness certificate

Follow up appointment(s)

You will usually be informed of your follow-up appointment during your stay with us. Please ensure you have the details of your follow-up appointment before you leave.

Information about caring for your wound

If you follow the instructions and those given by your nursing team, your chances of complications will be significantly reduced.

Dressings

Not all surgical wounds need dressings, as skin forms a seal within a day or two of your operation. if you need one, however, it is important to follow our advice. The purpose of a dressing is:

• to absorb any leakage from your wound
• to provide ideal conditions for healing
• to protect the area and allow your wound to heal
• to prevent stitches or clips catching on your clothing

You will be given an appointment to attend the out-patient department for a change of dressing if appropriate.

Stitches

There are two types of stitches - those that dissolve and those that need to be removed. Dissolvable stitches will usually disappear on their own in seven to ten days. Non-dissolvable stitches may be in place for up to two weeks depending on your procedure. If the stitches cause you pain or discomfort then please contact us for advice.

Clips and staples

Clips or staples have to be removed and we will arrange a follow-up appointment with us or your GP surgery to have these removed. Depending on your procedure, these will be removed between three days and three weeks after your surgery.
