I was appointed consultant surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS trust in 2002.
 
My surgical training was at hospitals throughout the North West of England. In 2001 I worked as senior clinical fellow in upper gastrointestinal surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. This major teaching hospital is the tertiary referral centre for oesophageal cancer surgery in Queensland, and a leading centre for laparoscopic surgery.
 
I introduced minimally invasive surgery for oesophageal cancer to Southampton, and have developed this approach further with my colleague Jamie Kelly. I offer this approach to surgery in appropriate cases for both oesophageal and gastric disease including cancer.
 
I have been a member of the bariatric (obesity) surgical team in Southampton that has now performed over 1500 procedures since it was established in 2004. I offer laparoscopic gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic roux Y gastric bypass and revision surgery following previous failed weight loss surgery. I also have experience of the new endoscopic procedures of POSE and Endobarrier. In Southampton, together with my colleague Jamie Kelly we now have the greatest experience of these interventions in the UK. I have the only UK experience at present of Abiliti, a new weight loss procedure that involves implantation of an electronic device that helps individuals to manage their eating behaviour and hence their weight.
 
I care for patients from Southampton, Winchester, the New Forest, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight. I provide a comprehensive service in the area of upper gastrointestinal disease and enjoy working alongside other specialist colleagues in the management of particularly challenging and complex problems. As well as managing oesophageal and gastric cancers, and my obesity surgery practice, I also perform a wide variety of other laparoscopic surgery including cholecystectomy, hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, splenectomy, adrenalectomy, appendicectomy.
 
I am passionate about improving outcomes for patients and contributing to building high quality evidence to underpin clinical practice. As well as a busy clinical practice I am also research active in both oeosphagogastric cancer and weight loss surgery.

I am married with two children. My main interests outside work, other than family, are walking, sailing, golf, skiing and reading.
