Work is under way on Spire Southampton Hospital's £2m state of the art sports medicine facility which is set to turn the city into one of the leading sport and exercise medicine hubs in the UK.
Perform Southampton, in Millbrook, will open to patients in May this year providing an array of elite services, world class facilities and leading technologies to patients from high-level athletes to weekend warriors across the south of England.
Perform Southampton will also become the new home of all of Spire Southampton Hospital's existing out-patient physiotherapy services, giving around 10,000 patients a year a new and improved space and a range of new facilities in which to receive their treatment.
The interdisciplinary team from Perform Southampton will include experienced sport and exercise medicine physicians, physiotherapists and performance specialists supplying patients with world class diagnostic services and treatment, as well as giving them access to specialist surgeons just a few minutes away at Spire Southampton Hospital.
Spire Southampton Hospital Director Jane Whitney-Smith said: “It is an exciting time for all of us as Perform Southampton will not only provide the highest quality technology, diagnostic capability and treatments for those recovering from injury or simply looking to improve their fitness but will also create a state of the art rehabilitation facility for all of our out-patient physiotherapy services which allows us to provide an even better level of care to all of our patients.”
In addition to the consultancy and physiotherapy services available at the centre, patients will also have access to a hydrotherapy pool, body movement therapy based on a fusion of Pilates and yoga, sports massage, coaching and a gym fitted out with Technogym equipment and Alter-G treadmill, a technology developed by NASA. It will also form a research centre and hub for training the next generation of sport and exercise medicine physicians.
Dr Mark Wotherspoon, Sports Medicine Doctor to Hampshire Cricket and Southampton Football Club comments “I am hugely excited to be part of the Perform Centre. This really does allow a truly inter disciplinary approach to injury management for all age groups and all levels from elite through to occasional sports people. Not only that, it encourages the provision of excellent care for all musculoskeletal conditions in the general population, osteoarthritis being an obvious example. Exercise is fast being recognised as medicine and can now be prescribed, just like drugs, for a huge variety of medical conditions, including, arthritis, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and other breathing problems and mental health issues. It will provide a slick and seamless service for patients in a new state of the art venue"
