The LINX® System for chronic reflux disease

A new treatment using the latest LINX® System for chronic reflux disease (GORD) is available at Spire Southampton Hospital.

What is Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)?

The LINX® System offers a new treatment option for GORD using laparoscopy or key hole surgery

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) known also as GERD, is a chronic and often progressive condition caused by a weak Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (LOS) which allows acid and bile to ‘reflux’ or flow back from the stomach into the oesophagus. At least 10% of the population in western countries suffer from GORD.

Symptoms can vary from person to person although the problem reported most often is heartburn. Other symptoms include cough, chest pain, sore throat and regurgitation.

Without treatment, serious complications can occur such as oesophagitis, stricture, oesophageal cancer or Barrett's oesophagus.

The LINX® System

The LINX® System offers a new treatment option for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and works by reducing or eliminating symptoms through a simple, reversible procedure using laparoscopy surgery.

The LINX® System is a flexible band of small interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores. The band helps the LOS resist opening to gastric pressures, creating a barrier to the reflux of bile and acid.

Swallowing forces temporarily break the magnetic bond to allow food and drink to pass normally through the LOS. After swallowing, the magnets then close the LOS immediately to restore the body’s natural barrier to the reflux of bile and acid.

The procedure

The LINX™ System is placed just above the stomach, around the oesophagus, using a minimally invasive surgical technique called laparoscopy surgery.

The procedure generally takes less than an hour and is performed under a general anaesthetic. Once the band is in position, it will begin working immediately. Under the guidance of their consultant, patients are usually able to resume their normal diet and daily activities in less than a week.

Unlike other surgical treatment options for GORD, the LINX™ System does not require any anatomic change to the stomach.

Side effects are usually minimal and resolve over time.

How effective is the LINX® System?

The LINX® System either eliminates or reduces the symptoms of GORD without creating undue side effects.

A clinical study of the LINX® System showed significant relief of GORD symptoms and considerably reduced levels of acid exposure in the oesophagus two years after implant.

In addition, the study also shows that two years post implant:

  • 86% of people have completely stopped taking medication for GORD
  • 86% of patients are satisfied with their condition
  • 90% of patients have a normal level of acid exposure in the oesophagus
