At Spire Southampton Hospital, Hampshire we have developed a new cardiac stroke prevention service that involves a team of internationally renowned cardiac experts with an interest in stroke prevention. Our team of consultant cardiologists use state-of-the-art technology and treatments to evaluate and minimise patient risk. These technologies and treatments include cross-sectional imaging, medications, catheter ablation, left atrial appendage occlusion and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure.
Our expert consultants use state-of-the-art technology to evaluate the risk of stroke.
Across the UK approximately 1.2 million people suffer with atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is the most common heart rhythm abnormality that causes an irregularity of the pulse. This leads to blood in the atria becoming stagnant and may result in clots. These clots may break off and travel around the body, including the brain which may lead to a stroke.
The most effective way to prevent stroke is to identify, manage and control the major risk factors such as AF. Individuals at higher risk must be identified and the risk factors managed and controlled to minimize this risk.
All patients are assessed by a consultant cardiologist and where appropriate will be referred to a consultant neurologist or vascular specialist.
