State-of-the-art imaging technology significantly improves ability to diagnose and treat complex cases at Spire Southampton Hospital.
The £1 million upgrade to existing interventional radiology facilities provides high quality images which enable diagnosis and treatment for complex cases such as coronary heart disease, heart rhythm disorders and uterine, liver and ovarian embolisations.
Using detailed images, specially trained consultants are able to pinpoint the precise location of the problem by guiding narrow tubes or catheters through blood vessels and other pathways. Treatments using this equipment are also much less invasive to patients than normal surgical methods, therefore meaning patients can expect a quicker recovery time.

The new facilities were officially opened by The Right Worshipful The Mayor and Mayoress of Southampton Councillor Brian Parnell and Mrs Mary Parnell at 2pm on Friday 1st August 2008.
Speaking about the new facilities Melvin Robson, Hospital Director at Spire Southampton Hospital, said "This new technology has significantly improved our ability to diagnose and treat complex cases. Our Consultant Cardiologists use the detailed images to provide treatments for heart conditions, such as angioplasties for blocked arteries and stents for narrowed arteries. Also this week we have carried out our first Atrial Fibrillation, a complex procedure that corrects abnormal heart rhythms."
In addition to patients with heart conditions, the new technology also benefits those who need treatments for fibroid tumours and is an ideal setting for pain clinics, in particular chronic back pain.
Melvin continues, "The upgrade is just part of a large investment programme at our hospital. It ensures patients are treated using the latest technology and in a clean and safe environment."
