Neurological physiotherapy (or neuro physiotherapy) aims to help people who are suffering the physical effects of neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease. Among other benefits, neurological physiotherapy can help restore and maintain a patient’s movement and function and, ultimately, improve their quality of life.
Specific treatment plans to help overcome physical problems arising from neurological disorders
At Spire Roding Hospital, our physiotherapists are trained to work with patients who are experiencing problems such as neurological weakness, loss of physical confidence, deterioration of mobility and function and walking difficulties. Our team can offer guidance and advice to patients and their families and carers to manage very physically challenging conditions through physiotherapy.
After an initial assessment, our physiotherapists will devise a treatment plan in agreement with the patient so they can work together towards achieving the patient’s personal goals. Most of our patients are given an individually-tailored home exercise programme to ensure continued progress is maintained outside of the formal sessions.
At Spire Roding Hospital, we provide physiotherapy for a wide range of neurological conditions including:
- Stroke (early to late stages and of variable severity)
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Head injury
- Motor neurone disease
- Adults with cerebral palsy
- Neuropathies (disorders affecting nerves of the peripheral nervous system, i.e.; outside of the brain and spinal cord), such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome
- Balance problems (unsteadiness, tendency to fall)
- Vestibular dysfunction/rehabilitation (dizziness)
- Facial palsy
- Peripheral nerve injuries e.g. foot drop.
Because neurological conditions can be long-term and sometimes progressive, Spire Roding’s physiotherapists offer patients a review of their mobility and a refresher course of physiotherapy, at an agreed point in time after receiving their first treatment.
Home visits are available on request.
