Clinical Pilates at Spire Roding Hospital

The physiotherapy team at Spire Roding Hospital is pleased to let you know how we use Pilates as part of our treatment options.

Some of our Specialist Physiotherapists at Roding Hospital are qualified Pilates Clinicians

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a programme of exercises to improve physical condition, strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. Joseph H. Pilates, a German sportsman, devised it in the early part of the 20th century and it has been enhanced and progressed since then.

Pilates has an emphasis on breathing control and on strengthening the ‘core’ muscles: transversus abdominus (which runs between the ribs and the pelvis at the front of the body), multifidus (next to the spine in the lower back) and the pelvic floor muscles which, together, play a pivotal role in helping to protect the back by giving it internal support.

The exercises are low impact and gentle, but can be challenging. When performed correctly, Pilates is currently considered to be the best exercise regime for helping to improve posture and back pain caused by degenerate disc disease or after back injury or surgery.

How do we deliver Pilates?

We use Pilates exercises as part of our private patient treatment options. Just as each individual is unique, so are Clinical Pilates exercises. They are tailored to each person’s needs and the patient is taught how to perform them correctly and to modify and progress them as necessary. We believe this is the best way to safely deliver Pilates.

It is for this reason that, at Roding Hospital, we do not run Pilates classes, as we believe that generic class exercise for rehabilitation is not appropriate, since it does not allow the Clinician to be able to keep a close eye on every person’s moves, which if done incorrectly can cause existing conditions to persist or even deteriorate. If Clinical Pilates exercises are recommended as part of your treatment, we would advise you to wear comfortable clothing, with leggings, joggers or shorts and socks.
