What is Pilates?
Pilates is a programme of exercises to improve physical condition, strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. Joseph H. Pilates, a German sportsman, devised it in the early part of the 20th century and it has been enhanced and progressed since then.
Pilates has an emphasis on breathing control and on strengthening the ‘core’ muscles: transversus abdominus (which runs between the ribs and the pelvis at the front of the body), multifidus (next to the spine in the lower back) and the pelvic floor muscles which, together, play a pivotal role in helping to protect the back by giving it internal support.
The exercises are low impact and gentle, but can be challenging. When performed correctly, Pilates is currently considered to be the best exercise regime for helping to improve posture and back pain caused by degenerate disc disease or after back injury or surgery.
