Oncology Physiotherapy Treatments

At Spire Roding Hospital we aim to support you through each part of your journey: from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

At Spire Roding Hospital we aim to support you through each part of your journey: from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

There are many ways in which physiotherapy can help you, both to prepare for treatment and to reduce any complications following this. We want to enable you to remain as independent as possible throughout and to help you return to the things you enjoy as soon as possible.

When you contact the team you will be asked to give a brief description of the problem you would like treatment for so that an appointment can be made with a specialist physiotherapist. If, however, you have been seen on the ward our in-patient physiotherapists will manage your referral for you.

During the first appointment your physiotherapist will undertake a thorough assessment, taking account of any problems you feel you are having alongside your lifestyle, and expectations for how you want to live your life. Once a diagnosis has been made, a treatment plan can be tailored to your specific needs.

Common problems reported following oncology treatments include:

• Pain
• Reduced joint movement
• Muscle weakness
• Fatigue
• Poor mobility
• Scarring

Physiotherapy treatment aims to:

• Decrease pain
• Improve joint movement and muscle strength
• Assist and actively encourage return to exercise
• Improve sense of health and wellbeing
• Assist return to work
• Help with activities of daily living
• Improve body image

Physical activity

There are many benefits to maintaining or increasing physical activity levels at all stages of cancer treatment.

At Spire we can help you return to physical activity in a safe and supported environment. We will be able to help you progress towards achieving your goals, while taking your individual needs and symptoms into account.
