What's involved in having a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus (womb). The operation may also involve removing one or both of the fallopian tubes and one or both of the ovaries, depending on the reason why the operation is being carried out.

There are two types of hysterectomy - vaginal and abdominal

A vaginal hysterectomy involves removing the uterus through the vagina. It is performed under general anaesthetic, which means you will be asleep during the procedure. The operation usually requires a hospital stay of two to four days.

An abdominal hysterectomy involves removing the uterus through an incision on the abdomen. It is also usually done under general anaesthetic and usually requires a hospital stay of up to five days.

Is hysterectomy surgery available on the NHS?

Hysterectomies are currently being restricted by the NHS in some areas of the UK and waiting lists are becoming significantly longer, depending upon the reasons for the hysterectomy (such as to treat heavy menstrual bleeding). For these reasons many people opt for private hysterectomy treatment.
