A mammogram - a breast x-ray - to help identify breast cancer in its early stages.
During a mammogram a radiographer will position your breast in a mammography unit. Your breast will be placed on a special platform and compressed so that all the breast tissue can be seen clearly and to prevent any movement.
All mammograms are double reported by specialist Consultant Radiologists.
Bone Density Assessment
Working with Sectra, Lifescan is able to offer a new screening service for osteoporis (loss of bone density). Using the same technology we use for mammography, we take a simple x-ray of your hand. The x-ray is sent to Sectra who analyse the images to assess your current bone density and whether there are any signes of osteoporosis or bone density loss.
CA-125 blood test
This specialist blood test checks the levels of cancer antigen (CA) 125, a protein which often reaches abnormally high levels in the blood of many women with ovarian cancer. It is helpful in the detection of ovarian cancer and used alone can detect up to 80% of ovarian cancers.
Vitamin D blood test
Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and some studies have shown that approximately 50% of mature adults being treated for osteoporosis may be deficient in Vitamin D. A recent UK survey suggested that more than half the adult population in the UK has insufficient levels of Vitamin D and in the winter and spring about 1 in 6 people has a severe deficiency. Many people may have no symptoms at all of this deficiency whilst others may have vague symptoms will be vague including tiredness or general aches.
