Tony Bartley, a psychology teacher from Congleton, underwent a double laparoscopic (key-hole) hernia operation at Spire Regency Hospital in February 2013.
I picked the Regency because it offered the shortest waiting time and I was keen to get the problem fixed
Tony describes his experiences here. “At the age of 58 I decided to take up windsurfing. I found it was brilliant fun and really enjoyed myself, but it did take its toll. I think my new hobby was the trigger for the hernia.
This is certainly what I tell my students - it sounds much more impressive than the reality, which was I was vacuuming the carpets in the car when it finally went! “It was a bit frightening when it happened but I knew straight away what it was and made sure I took plenty of care from then on until it was sorted. “I went to the GP and was told I could choose where I’d like to have the operation carried out. I picked Spire Regency because it offered the shortest waiting time and I was keen to get the problem fixed.
“My experience of the hospital was very positive – I couldn’t fault it from the moment I walked in. My surgeon –Mr Sajal Rai – was down to earth, helpful and went through exactly what would happen. He completely put me at ease.
The pre-op assessment was also very thorough, I had a complete health MOT and the team answered any questions I had. “I went in for the operation at 9am and by 7.30pm that evening I was discharged. I’d heard horror stories of being in horrendous pain from colleagues who had undergone similar operations, so I was prepared for agony. But in the end, I can honestly say I only experienced discomfort and I managed on paracetamol.
I have only the highest regard for the skills of the surgeon and the anaesthetist involved in my operation. “The nurses were also very helpful and gave me sensible advice to ensure that I didn’t overdo it during recovery, while also stressing that I shouldn’t be too over-cautious. Four days after the operation I started walking a mile each day, still taking it very easy, which helped my progress.
“I felt in completely safe hands during my treatment at Spire Regency – I’d like people to know a hernia operation isn’t something they should feel afraid of.”
