October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 9 women in the UK are likely to develop breast cancer during their lifetime and majority of cancers occur in women over the age of 50.

Our consultant Breast Surgeon Mr Kokan urges women to take steps and catch breast cancer whilst it’s in its early stages. Catching the signs early not only increases the chances the cancer will be cured, but can also reduce the need for more invasive treatment.

“It is very important for women to know what their breasts look and feel like and check them regularly so that they can detect when something's wrong. The best time to examine a breast is immediately after a period. It is also important to examine the armpit and the chest up to the collar bone”.

The following are warning signs of breast cancer:

  • Changes in the outline or shape and size of breast
  • Skin changes such as puckering or dimpling
  • Any new lump or nodularity in a breast especially if it is not present in the same part of the other breast
  • Nipple discharge if it contains blood or a clear new spontaneous discharge
  • Indrawing of the nipple
  • Redness or rash on or around the nipple

“Most breast changes are likely to be normal or due to a benign (not cancer) breast condition rather than being a sign of breast cancer”.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month Mr Kokan, who is part of a team of experts from the Spire Regency Breast Clinic, stressed the importance if you notice any of these changes – “Go see a specialist breast surgeon and attend a one-stop clinic where you will be examined, have a mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy if necessary”.
