Matt Papworth

Spire Physiotherapy Team Leader

Matt Papworth, Physiotherapy Team Leader at Spire Portsmouth Hospital

Matt has worked in physiotherapy, sport and fitness for almost 15 years providing a wealth of experience in returning patients to full fitness. He has worked in the NHS and with professional and amateur sports teams around the world. He has specialist interests in phyical and pulmonary rehabilitation to help patients get better sooner.

Matt also practices what he preaches. In 2012 he competed in the European ironman championship in Roth, Germany, and he has participated in many other triathlongs and endurance races.

Matt is also our resident sportaholic, as he regularly enjoys, golf, badminton, tennis, windsurfing, sailing, football and rugby. His personal interest and his extensive physiotherapy experience has resulted in him becoming a very well respected sports physiotherapist.

Susan Rutter

Spire Physiotherapist

Sue qualified from Cambridge School of Physiotherapy in 1991.  She then gained extensive experience across different physiotherapy specialities working in the NHS at Charring Cross Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital London. Sue then travelled to New Zealand where she practised for 10 years treating mainly musculoskeletal and sports injuries including the All Blacks!

Since her return to the UK she has worked in private practice and at Spire Portsmouth Hospital. Here she works both with in- and outpatients. She has a passionate interest in Orthopaedics and pre-operative education as well as post-operative rehabilitation and treatment. She works closely with the orthopaedic consultants to ensure appropriate progression and positive results, returning people back to their desired activities as soon as possible.

Sue is married with three teenage children. She enjoys an active lifestyle, playing badminton, sailing and cycling!

Melanie de Lacy

Spire Continence and Women's Health Specialist Physiotherapist

Melanie has worked as the Women's Health Physiotherapist at Spire Portsmouth Hospital since 2007.

She has 25 years of experience working as a physiotherapist covering sports and continence (women's health) physiotherapy. Melanie has worked for many years in sports both at local and elite level, most notably with England Netball.

With her interest in spinal rehabilitation and core stability, Mel obtained a post graduate certificate in continence from Bradford University and became a member of the ACPWH, the Women's Health clinical interest group. This led to her current role in women's health at Spire.

Melanie has continued to develop her role and works closely with physiotherapy and medical colleagues to deliver effective education and rehabilitation to both in- and outpatients. Women's health physiotherapy is a specialist field and includes gynaecology, breast, uro-gynaecology and bowel disorders.

Matt Woodhouse

Spire Physiotherapist

Matt joined the physiotherapy team at Spire Portsmouth Hospital after graduating with honours in physiotherapy from the University of the West of England in 2014. Matt trained in Bristol where he enjoyed successful rotations with the majority spent on musculoskeletal outpatients and orthopaedic wards.

Matt works predominantly with outpatients but splits his time on the wards as well, where he enjoys an excellent working relationship with the nursing staff and consultants. This allows him the unique opportunity to follow a patient’s rehabilitation from day one through to outpatients; offering consistent, reliable, informative feedback and treatment.

Matt also enjoys the physical side of his work. As an avid sportsman he has represented Hampshire in both rugby and athletics, competing at a national level in the latter. 

Wyle Price

Spire Physiotherapy Technical Instructor

Wyle Price, Physiotherapy Technical Instructor at Spire Portsmouth HospitalWyle has been working at Spire Portsmouth Hospital for 15 years and as an assistant in the physiotherapy department for 11 years. This experience provides her with a wealth of knowledge about how not only the department runs, but the hospital as well.

Three years ago Wyle passed her NVQ 3 to become a physiotherapy technical instructor, and this accumulation of skills and knowledge contributes to the smooth running of the physiotherapy department.

Wyle now enjoys treating a wide range of patients on the wards following their orthopaedic operations. She also runs the preoperative total hip replacement classes.  Her many administrative roles include stock control, accounts queries, and Wyle regularly attends planning meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings on behalf of the physiotherapy team.

In her spare time Wyle enjoys walking, cycling, gardening and catching up with friends and family.

Emma Gamble

Spire Physiotherapy

Emma Gamble, Spire Reactivate Physiotherapist at Spire Portsmouth HospitalEmma graduated from the School of Physiotherapy at the University of Brighton in 2006. She spent six years working within the NHS where she completed her rotations and specialised in musculoskeletal outpatients.

Emma also gained experience working with patients of all ages and athletic ability in her time working in a private sector sports clinic.

Since her time at Spire Portsmouth Hospital, Emma has developed her interest in pre and post-operative treatment and rehabilitation. She has a close working relationship with the orthopaedic and radiology consultants ensuring the best treatment for all patients. Emma will shortly be finishing her Masters degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Brighton.

Jean Howell

Specialist Occupational Therapist (Hand Therapy)

Jean trained in Oxford and has been an Occupational Therapist for 29 years. She has worked in a variety of NHS and community settings, specialising in hand therapy for the last 8 years.

She has completed British Association of Hand Therapy accreditation courses at levels one and two and regularly attends hand therapy conferences and study days to keep up-to-date with her specialism.

Jean joined the team in 2014. She provides a splinting and hand therapy service for people after surgery or injury or with any condition affecting the hand and wrist.

Anna Beardshaw

Spire Physiotherapist and Acupuncture Specialist

Anna is an experienced part-time senior physiotherapist. She trained in Oxford where she developed an interest in musculoskeletal conditions whilst working as a junior clinician. She was then lucky enough to complete her musculoskeletal senior rotations in Oxford before moving to Hampshire. She has been working at Spire Portsmouth Hospital since 2011.

Anna enjoys many aspects of physiotherapy. She treats all aspects of the body and can also use acupuncture either in conjuncture with physiotherapy or as a standalone treatment. Anna finds acupuncture to be particularly beneficial for reducing pain levels thus enabling people to do their exercises and become more mobile. She also runs the post-operative total hip and knee classes.

Anna has two young children to run around after so in her limited spare time that is not spent with the family, she enjoys tennis, swimming, reading and catching up with friends.
