Our Respiratory Service offers fast access to our Respiratory Consultants and the specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist. This dedicated team provide their expertise to improve or alleviate symptoms. With access to Spire Portsmouth Hospital's state-of-the-art facilities, including diagnostic imaging such as CT scans and x-ray as well as pathology, our Respiratory team are well placed to provide each patient with the best possible care.
Some of the problems and tests that our Respiratory Service looks at are mentioned below.
Allergy testing: this service is provided by pathology. Bloods will be taken and tested to establish the possbile causes of respiratory disorders to enable the specialist to form a treatment plan.
Asthma: there are many types of asthma including allergic asthma, corticosteroid resistant asthma and occupational asthma. Our Respiratory Service is able to help asthma sufferers to live normal, healthy lives through management of their symptoms.
Breathlessness: our Respiratory Service can use a number of facilities including CT scans, x-rays and blood tests to diagnose the source of the problem and either treat it through medication or lifestyle changes and exercises.
Bronchiectasis: this is caused by an excessive build up of mucus in the lungs leading to inflammation and infections. Spire Portsmouth Hospital's Respiratory Service can diagnose the symptoms, using the latest respiratory equipment, CT imaging and pathology, and treat them with surgery and medicine.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): COPD has many causes including, smoking and genetics. Our Respiratory Service has access to a wide range of diagnostic tests which aid our consultants in providing the most suitable management plan for each patient.
Occupational and Environmental Lung Disease: often this is caused by patients who encounter harmful substances, such as asbestos, in working or everyday life. Using the latest diagnostic techniques our Respiratory Consultants can diagnose, treat and provide methods of controlling the symptoms.
Our Respiratory Consultants work in conjunction with a specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist. Our physiotherapist has several years’ experience in managing respiratory disorders. During regular one-to-one sessions there will be an improvement in your ability to manage your breathlessness, functional ability and understanding of your condition and symptoms.
