Jane Whitaker qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist (slt) in 1984 at The School for Disorders in Human Communication affiliated to University College London, now based at City University.
She worked at Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth and was awarded a Travelling Fellowship in 1986 to visit places of excellence in the management of acquired swallowing disorders: Honorary SLT in Northwestern Hospital Chicago and Veteran's Hospital Wisconsin.
In 1989 Ms Whitaker was awarded a research scholarship from the Stroke Association to investigate the incidence / prevalence of acquired swallowing disorders post acute stroke.
In 1990 she was appointed Principal Speech and Language Therapist at Southampton University Hospital Trust and helped develop specialist clinic with radiography to ivestigate swallowing disorders.
In 2000 appointed Manager of Speech and Language Therapy for the Priory Group, she also lead a research project for West Sussex Community NHS Trust in investigating the development of a community outreach team to reduce hospital admissions for acquired swallowing problems.
