Currently, Professor Kim is based at the St George’s Teaching Hospital in London, and works closely with Head & Neck team at the Royal Marsden Hospital. However, he continues to undertake clinical sessions at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, offering specialist service in Head & Neck and Thyroid Surgery.
He qualified in Medicine from Edinburgh University in 1995 and Dentistry from Birmingham University (2001). He subsequently trained at Edinburgh and Cambridge teaching hospitals. In the latter stages he completed a specialist ENT surgery program within the West Midlands and an Advanced Fellowship in both Head & Neck Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital and the Mount Sinai Hospital, under the tutelage of the world's most renowned surgeons and oncologists.
Professor Dae Kim has a wide experience in treating all aspects of adult and paediatric ear, nose and throat disorders, and is happy to see and manage patients with the full range of ENT problems including ear & hearing problems, nasal and sinus problems and complex head & neck problems.
Professor Kim has a strong commitment to research. He was research fellow at the Harvard Medical School and completed a PhD doctorate examining the molecular basis of both thyroid and head and neck cancers, for which he was awarded the prestigious 'Syme Medal' by the Royal College of Surgeons. Recently, he was recognised for his contribution to surgical innovation and research with the award of a Professorship in Surgery by Portsmouth University.
As testaments to his strive for excellence, he has been awarded multiple research grants and numerous national and international prizes (from the American Thyroid Association and British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons). He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, many in prestigious journals, and several specialist surgical book chapters including the world famous text book 'The Surgery of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands', edited by Professor Greg Randolph of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University.
After the Advanced Endocrine Surgery Fellowship, he further trained to perform minimally invasive 'key-hole' thyroid and parathyroid surgery under the pioneers of this technique; Professor David Terris (USA) and Professor Paulo Miccoli (Italy). In addition, Professor Kim has completed a dedicated 'Robotic and Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery Fellowship' at the prestigious Severance Endoscopic and Robotic Institute (Seoul). Here he was mentored by the world famous Professor Chung who has pioneered the transaxillary "scarless" robotic and endoscopic thyroidectomy. Given his unique and extensive training, Professor Kim is the only surgeon in the UK who routinely performs minimally-invasive, keyhole thyroid and parathyroid surgery and one of only 2 surgeons in UK who performs scarless transaxillary endoscopic (keyhole) and Da Vinci robotic thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
