Sonia Wakelin graduated from Edinburgh University in 1997 and completed her higher surgical training in Scotland. During her training, she undertook a period of research investigating the mechanisms of long term kidney loss in transplant patients. This led to the award of a PhD in 2006. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and has been a Consultant Surgeon in Portmsouth since February 2011.
In the NHS her practice includes a range of general elective and emergency surgery with the majority of the former (gallbladder and hernia operations) being undertaken as daycase procedures. Outside general surgery, her specialist interests are kidney transplantation and general surgery in transplant recipients. She also performs dialysis access procedures including peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions and fistula formation.
