Dr Nixon qualified from King’s College London Medical School in 1992. Following junior appointments in London she commenced training in anaesthetics, in 1993, in Wessex (working in Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester and Swindon, over the next 10 years). Additionally during her training she spent a year in Leicester and then a year at Great Ormond Street, where she completed advanced training in Paediatric anaesthesia.
Dr Nixon was appointed as consultant in Portsmouth in 2003. Her specialist areas of interest include anaesthesia for: major upper gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, thyroid and breast surgery and paediatric anaesthesia. Dr Nixon is also particularly involved in the preoperative assessment and preparation of patients undergoing oesophageal cancer surgery and major bariatric surgery and established this service in her NHS practice.
Throughout her career Dr Nixon has been actively involved in medical education. She was the College Tutor for six years, with overarching responsibility for training and education within the department. She is currently completing a Masters degree in medical education.
She also has a strong interest in quality of care, demonstrated throughout her career. She worked closely with the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists as a trainee in her role as the Chairman of the trainee’s body for Great Britain and Ireland. Both these National bodies exist to protect and promote quality in anaesthesia. As an experienced consultant, she has now trained as an Assessor for the Royal College of Anaesthetists new accreditation process (ACSA) and is leading this process within the NHS department. Through this involvement, she is an invited member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists “Quality Management and Assurance Committee” and is committed to the delivery and maintenance of high quality anaesthetic services.
